  • W. Smith Packaging (merged into Smithpack Limited) was a large nationwide manufacturer of corrugated packaging and wooden crates.
  • Formed in the 1960’s, the company latterly grew substantially through the acquisition of competitors and established a nationwide presence of standalone manufacturing sites.
  • The company benefited from there being significant technical acuity within its management and was very forward thinking with regards to embracing technology.

Business Challenge

  • The company had inherited various outdated, incompatible and unsupported systems across various sites.
  • Extracted data came in multiple incompatible formats.
  • Regular financial reporting was a growing burden and increasingly time consuming.
  • Period-end cut offs were a moving target.
  • As each site was operating a different system and difficult to standardise procedures.

Solution

Software and Hardware

  • The general IT at several sites was completely upgraded and small Windows servers were installed at various sites
  • Several industrial Symbol laser scanners were procured.
  • Large and small industrial Zebra barcode label printers were installed.

Implementation

  • We conducted extensive systems analysis, gaining a thorough understanding of each person’s job.
  • We created bespoke production and supplier purchase order documents (with the necessary rules-based functionality).
  • We barcode labelled all stock at each site.
  • Scanned Customer Shipments were implemented.
  • A full barcoded stock-take was performed and the database corrected.
  • The necessary bespoke reporting was designed, including:
    • Works Orders
    • Purchase Orders
    • Customer Billings
    • Customer Shipment Notes
    • Stock Movement Sheets
    • Order Fulfilment Sheets
    • Logistics Planning Sheets
    • Customer Statements
    • Supplier Remittance Advices.
